"Thank you!" to all of the volunteers from the School of Natural Resources and other departments who helped make NaturePalooza 2011 a success, and congratulations to Sue Ellen Pegg for bringing it all together. The final tally was 605 highly enthusiastic visitors to our 16 different exhibits on Sunday, Nov. 6, a day of discovery and hands-on activities at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Morrill Hall.

SNR's Applied Ecology area presented Snakes of Nebraska, featuring live snakes and turtles. This exhibit, staffed by Dennis Ferraro, Joey Churilla, Monica Keep, Justin Zwick, Alex Hopp and Taylor Montgomery gave visitors a chance to ask questions about animals they have encountered. Tern and Plover Conservation Partnership
The Tern and Plover Conservation Partnership, based at SNR, had an exhibit staffed by Mary Bomberger Brown and Chris Thody, where visitors made beach bracelets, similar to those worn by endangered species. SNR Geography presented a Morrill Hall Scavenger Hunt, staffed by Gabrielle Collins, that took visitors throughout the museum, and required them to spend time reading exhibit descriptions.

National Drought Mitigation Center
The National Drought Mitigation Center presented the Past, Present and Future of Drought, with help from Tonya Bernadt, Nicole Wall, Deb Wood, Meixiu Yu, Chris Poulsen, Joe Robine, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Lisa Pytlik Zillig and Mike Hayes. They used classroom clickers to test visitors' drought knowledge, and demonstrated the U.S. Drought Monitor and the Drought Impact Reporter. Younger visitors got to assemble a climate-related puzzle. USGS Nebraska Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit
The USGS Nebraska Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit presented Shapes, Sizes and Colors: The many adaptations of Nebraska's birds, staffed by Chris Jorgensen, Ryan Stutzman and Lindsey Messinger. Visitors played a bean bag game to match a bird with its prey, got to feel wings, feathers, skulls and feet, and learned what makes each species unique.
The coop unit also presented Fishing in Nebraska, staffed by Dustin Martin, Chris Chizinski, Lindsey Chizinski and Amber Fandrich. Visitors learned about the science behind fishing and lake management, different fish species in Nebraska, and what each kind of fish likes to eat. The stream table showed how moving water affects natural and managed landscapes. Other activities let visitors match images with locations in Nebraska and nearby states, find current and historic images of Lincoln on Google Earth, assemble jigsaw puzzles of the United States and the world, and learn more about careers in geography and Geographic Information Systems.
