Welcome to Nebraska HIS

Overview

The Nebraska agricultural sector suffers from a lack of accurate and detailed seasonal weather and hydrological forecasts. Crude agro-hydrological specific models have been developed, often in academic environments, to address this need. Weather Research forecasting (WRF) and High Resolution Land Data Assimilation System (HRLDAS) with the goal of producing a more accurate evapotranspiration, soil temperature and moisture forecast at high temporal and spatial resolutions. In this system we are localizing and evaluating land surface models with bowen ration sensor network installed in irrigated fields. After an evaluation period, the output will be used to drive weather prediction models and incorporated into the Hydrological Information System (HIS). HRLDAS and WRF are currently being run at 1 km resolution for entire Midwest with special emphasize on Nebraska. HIS will be developed as web based geospatial information system which will be used to aid water managers, and decision makers in analyzing and effectively mitigating the effects of sever climate. The information within the HIS is organized into six broad categories of agriculture news, current weather, short term weather prediction, and water use advisory for farmers. The weather page provides standard agriculture weather forecast and current condition from WRF model. It also provides access to historical analyzed hydrological dataset. These weather products are provided as regularly updated graphical images. Further mobile apps will be developed as small-footprint mobile geospatial applications that provide basic HIS functionality including image display, zooming and analyzing capabilities.
