Abstract:

Locations of observed center-pivot irrigation systems in Nebraska. Pivot locations were detected on satellite photos (based on the observation of vegetation growing in circles) and converted into a legal location for the tabular database. Observations were made annually commencing in 1972 and ending in 1988. If a pivot appeared to be inactive, it was not categorized as active for the current year, but retained for examination in subsequent years. In 1988, the pivots were digitized into the ArcInfo database, and 'legals' were not added for the newly observed pivots. Pivot locations are accurate to within a 160-acre area at best.

Purpose:

To summarize center-pivot irrigation activity in Nebraska over time.

Supplemental_Information:

More recent data on pivot activity are also available from CSD. For example, polygons representing center pivot irrigation areas were created using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery for the year 1997. Similar data are not known to be available for the years 1989 to 1996.
Pivot data were published annually as 1:1,000,000-scale maps and are available via the UNL School of Natural Resources' Map and Publications Store, online at <http://nebraskamaps.unl.edu> (LUM-#10, 13, 16-24, and 26-28). For example:

The program used to generate latitude and longitude coordinates from a legal description apparently came from the USGS and has unknown accuracy.

Process_Description:

Over a period of years CSD remote sensing staff inventoried over 33,000 center pivot systems that could be observed by satellites. They assigned a legal description to each site as observed, and tabulated the information. A computer program converted the legal description into lat/long coordinates and a unique key for each pivot. The ArcInfo command GENERATE created the coverage, the command JOINITEM added the attributes from tabular files, and then the cover was PROJECTed into the CSD standard Lambert projection.

Attributes are as follows: PIVOTS#, PIVOTS-ID, ST, CTYNUM, TWP, R, SEC, Q, YEARS, Y88, NRC, LAT, LONG, PLTQD, LAST5, Y73, Y74, Y75, Y76, Y77, Y78, Y79, Y80, Y81, Y82, Y83, Y84, Y85, Y86, Y87, and Y88. PIVOTS-ID is, according to a previous version of metadata, a unique id number, commencing at 1, and "based on sequence by legal description (Twp-Range-Section-subsection)." ST is the FIPS code for the state of Nebraska (value of 31). CTYNUM is a value between 1 and 93; pivots with the same value occur in the same county. TWP, R, and SEC refer to Public Land Survey System coordinates; they indicate the township, range, and section, respectively, in which the pivot occurs. These variables were not assigned values for the last year, 1988. Q indicates the quarter-section subdivision in which the pivot occurs: The letters A, B, C, or D correspond to the NE, NW, SW, and SE quarter-sections and are listed in reverse order by size. For example, NE of the NW of the SW of the SE would code as 'DCBA.' The NW quarter would code as 'B.' YEARS, LAST5, Y73, Y74, etc contain information about the year(s) in which a pivot was observed as being operational. Y73, Y74, etc indicate whether a pivot was operational in 1973, 1974, etc: A value of 0 indicates the pivot was not operational that year. Any other value indicates the pivot was operational that year. In most cases if the pivot was operational the corresponding cell will have a value equal to the last digit of the variable name, e.g., a value of '3' for Y73 indicates the pivot was operational in 1973. The exception is for years ending in 0, such as 1980. Here, the value for an operational pivot is 5. YEARS and LAST5 are concatenations of non-zero values for all years through 1987 and for 1979-1983 respectively. NRC values range from 1-24; the meaning of the field is unknown. PLTQD values range from 1-12 and correspond to subdivisions, based on a grid system, of the state, but the meaning of the field is unknown to the metadata creator. LAT and LONG are the coordinates of the approximate pivot location in decimal degrees.
