Description:
Abstract:
The thickness of the principal aquifer is a series of contour lines showing the estimated thickness of the saturated sediments that serve as the source aquifer for domestic and irrigation wells. It was digitized from 1:250,000 paper maps published in 1980 and has been used as the 'normal' thickness of the aquifer. The principal CSD geoscientist was Vern Souders. Areas where the principal aquifer is 'absent or very thin' are coded as polygons with a value of 0 thickness. These are areas of impermeable rock or clay. Some of the areas are fractured and may yield considerable water if the well hits the fracture. Thickness of the principal aquifer is difficult to define when a water-producing well has a very low yield. Most of Nebraska is underlain by the Ogalala formations of saturated, permeable, and porous strata that yields very large quantities of water. But many areas do not yield much, or are too spotty to be useful. This database attempts to summarize this relationship.
Purpose:
To quantify and summarize the concept of "Thickness of the Principal Aquifer"

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Digitized from paper maps published at 1:250,000 scale. The thickness contours were interpreted and drawn using well data from CSD testholes, registered wells, and other sources. They follow the standard of being generalized to 1/2 of the vertical interval. A confidence diagram included in the source mapping mirrors the density of wells to examine. Confidence is high near streams and where high capacity irrigation wells are plentiful. Confidence is lower where wells are sparse or there are considerable glacial till deposits, as the yields are unpredictable from such materials.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The coverage is topologically correct for both Arc and polygon features
Completeness_Report: Coverage is state-wide and complete

Process_Description:
Paper 1x2 degree sheets were digitized using standard ArcInfo techniques. Each arc was given the appropriate thickness value. Boundary arcs enclosing the state were added, resulting in a topologically clean polygon coverage Each polygon was encoded with the thickness value and 'aquifer thin or absent' polygons. They were edgematched, appended, and then dissolved on the thickness value. 'Nodata' values are assigned to the state border arcs. In final version of data, features are represented as lines.

Attribute field 'THICK' is a value of a contour line referring to the thickness of the aquifer. Arcs of 'no data' value are not plotted. Arcs of '0' thickness are areas of where the aquifer is very thin or absent. All others have estimated thickness in feet.
